Doctor Who Merchandise
All The Doctor Who Merchandise You Could Ever Want
Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction TV show in the world. With a legion of devoted fans (some call them Whovians) it's no wonder that there's a whole load of different merchandise available, ranging from books and videos, to toys, figures and audio dramas. You could even get your own Doctor Who bedlinen, or a life size Dalek to scare people hiding behind the sofa. Let me take you through some of the weird, wonderful and downright wacky Doctor Who merchandise that's available out there in time and space.
Can't Get Enough Doctor Who?
Doctor Who, as a television show, is a worldwide phenomenum.
It's always been possible to buy both and classic and modern episodes on VHS, but now stories are easily available on DVD and some are on Blu Ray as well. If that's not good enough, they are repeated all around the world on TV and on a number of online streaming media services.
But what if that's not enough?
There's a whole load of original Doctor Who, unseen on TV, available to watch.
First, the book ranges. Stemming from a set of original Target novelisations of TV shows, now there are a few fresh books a year published by BBC books and featuring the latest incarnation of the Doctor. Although generally aimed at older children, these are equally accessible for adults alike.
In fact, there have been a lot of books published over the last 10 or 15 years, especially when the TV show was on hiatus. A number of these are highly collectible and very much aimed at adults. The Virgin range of New Adventures took the TARDIS crew into new territories and explored issues considered too adult for the TV show. BBC books continued with their own set of novels, featuring the then Doctor as played by Paul McGann. Finding and reading these books can provide months or years of fun and new excitement.
Outside the books, there are two other media of particular note. First, cartoon strips, published in the likes of Doctor Who magazine or in their own volumes. Second, the audio adventures. Many exist on CD, both official licenced productions and those just using familiar Dr Who actors. The best known set of these is produced by Big Finish, releasing at least one full cast story every month featuring the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors. These feature the original Doctor Who actors and companions and are well worth listening to for anyone interesting in expanding the genre. Often popular monsters, such as Daleks or Cybermen feature, along with enemies that have developed their own personality throughout Big Finish.
With so much non-TV media out there, you need never be bored again and there's enough media to fill your time through several regenerations.
